Recreation on Roatan
Recreational opportunities abound on Roatan so don’t fear boredom
or island fever! For a somewhat small island, it is a large world.
World Class Diving and Snorkeling are available all around Roatan and
on the neighboring Bay Islands of Utila and Guanaja. Whale sharks and
seahorses can be spotted along with turtles, eagle and manta rays and
an abundance of fish. Roatan is also one of the least expensive places
in the world to get dive certification. There are a variety of high
quality dive resorts including Anthony’s Key, Fantasy Island,
Coco Bay and Turquoise Bay. Or you can find a delightful room in West
Bay or West End and purchase your diving separately. We recommend Cabana
Lana, Lost Paradise, and Fosters Resorts in West Bay and West End.
- White sand beaches on the beautiful island of Roatan are plentiful for
swimming in the warm tropical waters.
- Sailing or Yachting are readily available out of several deep-water
marinas. Sheltered harbors offer protection from stormy weather.
- Sea Kayaks are readily available for rental and the calm sheltered waters
of Roatan’s North Shore make for wonderful kayaking.
- Deep Sea Sports Fishing is some of the best to be found with many charter
services available. Catch that huge marlin, Wahoo, or tuna for island
fun.
- Fly Fishing for Bone Fish, Permit, or Tarpon are also available.
A fisherman we know says he has never seen so many bonefish anywhere
else in the Caribbean.
- Swim with the dolphins at Anthony’s Key and Marine Institute.
It is a once in a lifetime experience you will always remember. Visit
the Roatan museum while you are there as well.
- Take a Canopy Ride at one of four different jungle locations. The hilly
and beautiful terrain makes this a natural way to enjoy the island views.
- Visit the monkeys and wild macaws at Gumbo-Limbo Nature Reserve. Hike
on lovely trails, tour the gardens, or visit a Pirate’s Cave.
- Ride horseback on the hillsides or along the beach on the somewhat
smaller, easy riding South American horses.

- Visit the Iguana Farm near French Harbor where you will be greeted
by hundreds of iguanas- in the parking lot alone. The farm is known
for its rare red iguanas near extinction.
- Windsurf or kite sail on the calm waters of the North Shore while enjoying
the constant trade winds.
- Hike the trails at Carambola Gardens or visit the Butterfly Park.
- Shop the various crafts shops in Coxen Hole and West End featuring Mayan
weavers demonstrating their ancient crafts.
- Sit back, relax and enjoy a beverage and some fresh seafood as the sun
sets in the west, signaling the end of another perfect day.
